More Americans than ever before favored legalizing cannabis in a Gallup poll released Monday.
In the survey, 68% of U.S. adults said marijuana should be legal, up from 66% a year earlier, with 32% opposed. Less than a decade ago, in November 2012, 50% of adults opposed legalizing cannabis and 46% supported it.
The poll was taken before Election Day, where voters in four states, including New Jersey, voted to legalize cannabis for recreational use.
“It’s clear that cannabis is much more powerful than any politician and the public is demanding changes to our outmoded cannabis laws,” said Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus.
And the U.S. House, which returns Monday for a lame duck session, is slated to vote on the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act, or MORE Act, which would eliminate the federal ban on cannabis and tax legal weed to help communities hardest hit by the war on drugs.
The poll of 1,035 adults was conducted Sept. 30-Oct. 15 with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
